Message from the President

Sinterklaas has left the Netherlands, sailing back to Spain, so we can now concentrate on the Holidays.

In a very uncertain and turbulent time, with war in the Gaza and Ukraine, the climate crisis and increasing pressure on society, I find it more difficult to see and enjoy the beauty of the Christmas period. However, we need to look positive in the future and try to make a change to our immediate environment, so I want to send out a short note with our College’s Season Greetings, hoping that this finds you well.

It has again been a very busy year for the College and it is important to remember that the College’s success depends on the time given by so many Committee Members. I would like to thank them all for their hard work and time.

I also would like to thank all our Diplomates involved in the training of residents. I really encourage everyone who feels the need for help in their residency programs, please to not hesitate to ask. The doors of the College members are always open.

I would also like to bring to your attention that the Executive Committee is dependent also on the input of the Diplomates. So, if there are any issues or concerns you would like to address, please do not hesitate to contact any member.

Before we start the new year 2024, I think it is helpful to look back of what we have achieved in 2023. Here are just a few of the initiatives in random order that the College has undertaken in 2023.

  • Continuing successful Rounds in Veterinary Diagnostic Imaging (RIVDI) and MOCK exam in London.
  • Successful First Zoom-meeting for Diplomates about the Flexible Pathways. Together with the Flexible Pathway Committee, Chris Warren-Smith presented a possible Modular Pathway. The Committee members answered many questions and together with the Executive Committee, the decision was made not to proceed with this pathway at this moment.
  • A very successful IVRA meeting in Dublin. A collection of fotos is available on the IVRA website, what great memories. https://www.ivraimaging.org/meetings/our-previous-meetings
  • First successful Forum discussion at the IVRA meeting for diplomates. The diplomates were able to discuss the current situation of veterinary radiologists on the market. For me there is a concern of having two camps within the college opposed to each other instead working together. However, the discussion has shown me that there is a will to work together.
  • Continuous reciprocal council attendance for ACVR and ECVDI Presidents at the board meetings. I attended the ACVR Board meeting in New Orleans in October. It was a very interesting experience and I felt that ACVR board members appreciated the effort to attend their Council Meeting in person. Hopefully ACVR and ECVDI will work even closer together in the future.
  • Further transparency of College Committee appointments. If you feel that there anything unclear, please do not hesitate to contact Board members or Catherine Barclay.
  • Introduction of a Joint committee ECVDI/ACVR Qualification Reciprocity. The aim is to determine whether the training requirements in each residency have been met in order to take the other exam, and if not, what additional training would be required.
  • Continuous joint collaboration with ACVR in the AI committee. An exciting and quickly developing field.
  • There has been more awareness for well-being of our Residents and Diplomates and there will be a committee who will look into how we can help residents and Diplomates where necessary.
  • The JTA committee has worked hard on the development of the new Job Task Analysis under guidance of Vice-President Fintan McEvoy and Rob Malinovski, which we hope to launch in the beginning of 2024. For every Diplomate filling in the JTA, ECVDI will sponsor a tree, so I hope we will be able to plant a new forest as a small contribution to help in the fight against the climate crisis.

We hope to continue these successes in coming years.

I would like to announce the next zoom meeting for Diplomates on the 8th February 2024 at 20.00 CEST time. Ryan Appleby will inform us on the current status of AI in veterinary medicine and the possible role of the colleges (ECVDI and ACVR). I hope again for a high attendance and a good discussion.  More information to follow

As the exams approach quickly (at the end of January), I would like to wish the best of luck to all Resident candidates who will sit our exams.

I would like to close by taking this opportunity to wish everyone a Happy and Healthy Christmas and a prosperous New Year and hopefully we can look forward to 2024 becoming a happier year across the whole of the globe.

With kind regards,
Susanne Boroffka (and Bacio)
President, ECVDI

EVDI Congress 2024

We are honoured to invite you to the 2024 EVDI Annual Meeting.
The meeting will take place in Athens, Greece from the 18th to the 21st of September and represents the largest gathering of members of the veterinary diagnostic imaging community in Europe. During the congress we will maximise every opportunity to provide an interactive discussion between radiologist and internal medicine, neurologists, oncologists, exotic animal specialists etc. Artificial intelligence updates and forensic radiology novel modality will also be further discussed during the event.

Here are some exciting facts about the 2024 annual Congress:

  • Sunny Athens is one of the most historical cities in Europe, offering a unique mixture of history, culture, and gastronomy.
  • The congress will be family friendly. It will be hosted in a hotel by the sea, and we will have the chance to combine our annual scientific meeting with sports and leisure activities.
  • During the congress colleagues will find the opportunity to join an artistic and athletic experience.
  • The social program will be guided by the Greek hospitality, including dancing, singing, and tasting the renounced Greek cuisine with your family and friends.
  • Dual speaker sessions during the congress will provide an interactive presentation of the novel diagnostic imaging techniques and their clinical impact.

More information to follow soon - keep an eye on the EVDI Congress website: https://www.evdi-congress.eu/

Online Publication from 2024

Veterinary Radiology & Ultrasound will be published in online-only format effective with the 2024 volume. This is a proactive move towards reducing the environmental impact caused by the production and distribution of printed journal copies and will allow the journal to invest in further innovation, digital development and sustainability measures. Published articles will continue to be disseminated quickly through the journal’s broad network of indexing services, including ISI, MEDLINE and Scopus. Articles will also continue to be discoverable through popular search engines such as Google. All colour images will now be reproduced digitally and published free of charge.

More information will follow about this in a separate email to members.

RIVDI

The RIVDI mock exam, which was held in London in November had a great turn out with 41 residents attending (36 SA & 5 LA) in preparation for sitting their Practical Examination in January 2024. The residents benefitted from some exciting and challenging cases presented by 12 ECVDI Diplomate examiners, with additional sessions from the Examination Committee and Wellbeing Committee. We have received great feedback (see a few comments below) and are already planning next year's event!

  • Highly experienced radiologists willing to support and help the residents through the exam.
  • The whole event is planned to create a positive environment and provide useful advice to the residents.
  • Relevant challenging cases, a team that genuinely cares, an “official” mock, an event that allows us to meet most of the other residents before the exam and the organisation of a dinner together!
  • Varied cases. Great case discussion, especially with literature review.
  • This Mock Board event was really helpful, well organised and it was very nice to meet everybody in person!

Diplomate RIVDI sessions continued this year and we are very grateful to Swan Specchi, Ioannis Panopoulos and Maurizio Longo for hosting the SA session last month, and to Mathieu Spriet for hosting the first LA session. Many diplomates joined us, with 27 present for the LA session, and over 50 present for the SA sessions! We are looking for enthusiastic volunteers to offer future Diplomate RIVDI sessions, for either large or small animals, to keep these sessions going through 2024. These sessions are meant to be informal case discussions for anyone interested, so please do consider it as we would really appreciate your participation and support. Please contact us at rivdi@ecvdi.eu to register your interest or for more information.

Radiation Oncology

For those of you that did not make it to New Orleans for ACVR this year, two radiation oncologists got lifetime award:

Lisa Forrest received the Bernstein Lifetime Achievement Award.  Only the second Rad Onc after Dr Thrall to receive this award.  Lisa Has been instramental to the development of Tomotherapy.

Our very own Michael Kent received the distinguished service award for his decade long tenure as the radiation oncology examination director for the ACVR.  Just last week, Michael was the first radiation oncologist elected to the council of the ACVR.

Don't forget the second radiation oncology annual general meeting virtually on Thu 11th Jan 4pm UK/5pm west/central Europe and our very first meeting with the ESVONC congress in Bucharest May 22-26 2024.
