The School of Veterinary Medicine of Freie Universität Berlin is a prestigious center for research, training, and animal care. It is one of only five sites in Germany offering education and training in veterinary medicine.

With over 1,600 students, including doctoral candidates, the school also offers a great number of postgraduate training and continuing education options in different veterinary specializations, with a broad range of opportunities to acquire academic degrees and additional qualifications in line with the concept of lifelong learning.

The research activities of the school’s eighteen academic units, including three animal clinics, are part of a worldwide network of experts in the field of veterinary medicine and related areas of research.

The school is based in the neighborhood of Steglitz-Zehlendorf in southwest Berlin.

The Animal Clinic at Freie Universität Berlin is a merger of three specialist animal clinics (Small Animal Clinic, Equine Clinic and Farm Animal Clinic) and the Center for Veterinary Clinical Services, each with its own separate administration and its own specialization. As a university institution, the Animal Clinic at Freie Universität Berlin serves as the central point of contact for veterinary services in the Berlin-Brandenburg metropolitan region with its over six million people.

The professor who fills this position will be based at the Center for Veterinary Clinical Services.

Responsibilities:

  • The successful applicant will cover research, teaching, and service in the clinical discipline of diagnostic imaging (radiology). The aforementioned responsibilities are to be carried out by the Diagnostic Imaging working group (for small and domestic animals, horses, and livestock), which is to be established by the new professor, who should be a specialist in the field of small animals.
  • The appointee will be responsible for managing the Diagnostic Imaging working group at the Center for Veterinary and Clinical Services.

Appointment requirements:

  • Governed by Section 100 of the Berlin Higher Education Act (Berliner Hochschulgesetz – BerIHG):
  • Approbation/license to practice veterinary medicine
  • Diplomate from the European College of Veterinary Diagnostic Imaging or the American College of Veterinary Radiology

Additional requirements for the appointment include:

  • Internationally recognized research achievements in the field of diagnostic imaging/radiology, especially with regard to small animals
  • Several years of experience in diagnostic imaging at clinics
  • Several years of experience in teaching at the university level in German and/or English and documentation of teaching qualifications (in German, English, or legally certified translations from the original language)
  • German language proficiency (at least B2 level according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages)
  • Experience in postgraduate training and education
  • Experience in the acquisition and implementation of externally funded research projects
  • Experience in leadership and management roles as well as personnel development
  • Experience in managing the finances of a small enterprise
  • Experience on scientific or academic boards and committees

Expectations:

Along with the regular official duties of professors listed in Section 99 BerlHG, we expect the appointee to engage in the following activities:

  • Develop their own research areas in the field of diagnostic imaging, as well as new ones.
  • Integrate their work into the existing structures, clinics, and working groups at Freie Universität Berlin’s Animal Clinic, the Veterinary Center for Resistance Research, and the institutions of the School of Veterinary Medicine overall, as well as collaborate with them.
  • Cooperate with other institutions and working groups at Freie Universität Berlin as well as relevant research institutions in the Berlin/Brandenburg metropolitan region.
  • Actively communicate their research achievements to audiences outside the university (outreach).
  • Implement a leadership style that strives to maintain a work-life balance among their team and acknowledges the links between management, motivation, and commitment to getting things done.
  • Further develop their own leadership skills.
  • Address gender and diversity issues in their teaching activities.
