Message from the President

Dear All
Image removed.

I had hoped that I would be able to be writing to you all as we approach Christmas in the hope that this year, we would be in a very different position to last year. Sadly the last few weeks have seen more of a return to the times of 2020. I hope that whatever regulations are in force in the different countries across Europe that everyone is able to stay safe and enjoy a well deserved break and where possible a chance to see family and friends.

Please find below some updates from the past few months. May I also ask everyone to ensure your details are up to date on the website so we are able to keep members involved and up to date with communications.

The flexible pathways working group held its initial meeting in November as we start to explore the opportunities provided by this third route to specialist status. Following this initial meeting, the group will meet again in the New Year with the aim being to have a proposal to present to the college at the Summer AGM, which will hopefully be in person in Edinburgh.

As you will be aware we have worked with the ACVR on a joint consensus statement oversight committee. The aim of this committee was to assemble groups of specialists to produce an over arching statement to set standards in Veterinary Imaging. I am pleased that the first such statement is approaching readiness. The next step is to open this statement up to the wider ACVR and ECVDI membership for review and comments so please keep an eye out for this being released as a special bulletin and on the website in January. I would also like to say a big thank you to Dr Nate Nelson for all his work over the last year in collaboration with ECVDI. Dr Nelson will be standing down as ACVR president at the end of this year and I look forward to working with the new incoming president Dr Federica Morandi for the remainder of my tenure.

I would like to finish by again thanking all of the committee members for their time and effort over the past year in supporting the college and without whom the college would not be able to run.

Kind Regards

Chris Warren-Smith
President, ECVDI

Message from the Radio Protection Committee

Radiological Protection in Veterinary Practice

The International Commission on Radiological Protection (ICRP) formed a Task Group (TG110 - https://www.icrp.org/icrp_group.asp?id=178) whose mandate is to advise the Main Commission on radiological protection aspects involved in the applications of ionising radiation in veterinary medicine. As such, this includes treatment of occupational and public exposure of humans as it relates to delivery of veterinary care, and radiological protection considerations for the animals receiving such care.  The Task Group is to also consider the risks resulting from contamination of the environment from the applications of nuclear medicine in veterinary medicine. The TG will include the ethical considerations underlying various types of veterinary practice, and the ethics applied to protection of animals and plants in the environment.

The draft Radiological Protection in Veterinary Practice is now available for public consultation. We welcome comments from individuals and organisations. The draft document can be downloaded from the ICRP website. Comments must be submitted through the ICRP website no later than March 11, 2022
